Recommended Calculators

Recommended Calculators
The mathematics department recommends the purchase of the TI-Nspire for use in all high school mathematics courses. The TI-nspire CX II is the latest version of the calculator that can be used through high school and into college. If your child is in the honors math program, then the calculator should be the CX II CAS version (note: CAS calculators are not permitted to be used for state testing). For more information about the calculator, visit the TI Nspire website.

Period 9

In Mathematics, practice is important. Students are encouraged to reach out to their teachers for additional help. Ridgewood High School offers Period 9 every day from 3:05-3:30 PM to provide students with the opportunity to ask questions and receive support when needed. Each teacher is available during this period, and they are there to help.

Math Placement

Ridgewood Public Schools strives to provide learning opportunities in mathematics that enhance student learning while creating critical thinkers and problem solvers. This process will look different for every student, and it is imperative that students have these learning experiences at the optimal time to reach their maximum learning potential and maintain a positive perspective of mathematics. The district's placement process is a critical component of providing students with the most appropriate placement opportunities for academic success in mathematics.

There are several components used to determine mathematics placement and are designed to be transparent and data driven. A variety of data points will be used to determine eligibility for the accelerated math program. Students who meet the required scores on the placement criteria will have the opportunity to join the double advanced mathematics program. This is an extremely challenging program geared towards engaging our accelerated math students in a rigorous setting.

Elementary School

The Ridgewood Public Schools Elementary Math curriculum is a problem based learning approach to mathematics.  This philosophy aligns with brain based instructional strategies and calls upon an inquiry approach to learning. Through this technique, children develop a felt need to apply new skill sets to problems and capitalize on their strengths, as they become metacognitive learners who can persevere through problem solving.

Math Sequences

There are a basic set of pathways that a student can follow in mathematics. There is movement permitted, based on student performance and teacher recommendations, between these pathways. Majority of high school students reach a level of Precalculus by senior year. However, some students choose to accelerate in order to take a Calculus course for their fourth-year mathematics. The district offers acceleration options for students placed in 8th Grade Mathematics with the goal of reaching Calculus by senior year of high school. Please consult with your child's school counselor to further discuss their placement options.

AMC Competition

Ridgewood Public Schools offers the AMC 8 and AMC10/12 (American Mathematics Competition) to Ridgewood students or residents of Ridgewood who attend schools outside of the district. Reach out to our AMC advisors for further information.
